The Ephrata Cloister dates back to 1732, when it centered around a congregation of devout celibates who practiced a simple life based on self-denial. The community was renowned for its artistic skills, which include original music and a form of broken letter calligraphy known as "Fraktur." The community dissolved in 1934.
